Purpose

Describe the characteristics of physicians returning to practice after a voluntary leave of absence. Discuss the impacts of these characteristics on physicians performance and determine the remedial programs that best correspond to the needs of reentry physicians. Discuss the success factors and potential obstacles associated with reentry.

Format

The workshop will use a combination of interactive presentation and small-group case discussion. During the workshop:

• With scenarios describing physicians seeking reentry into clinical practice, participants will have to propose educational programs that meet the specific needs of the reentry physician.
• Participants will have to identify the challenges and potential pitfalls for the training supervisor and for the trainee.
• Participants will discuss the potential predictors (personal, educational or administrative) of reentry success or failure.
• Data collected between 1998 and 2008 will be presented on the number of reentry physicians, the length and type of their educational programs and the final results of the reentry process.

Expected Outcomes for Participants

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

• Describe the different approaches to helping physicians plan their return to clinical practice.
• Discuss challenges and potential pitfalls for the reentry physicians and their training supervisors.
• Apply learned concepts to the development or improvement of reentry policies.
• Be informed about Quebec data on reentry into clinical practice.
