Synopsis

The University of Michigan Health System and the Mayo Clinic have each been working to have their physicians’ engagement in institutional quality improvement and education activities additionally meet requirements for Maintenance of Certification, particularly Part IV. Representatives of the two institutions will highlight their experiences to identify shared attributes while considering local nuances. The combined experiences will help individuals from other health care organizations understand approaches for their own institution to align existing institutional QI and educational efforts with helping physicians meet MOC requirements.

Abstract

The Mayo Clinic and the University of Michigan Health System have each been working to have their physicians’ engagement in institutional quality improvement (QI) and education activities help physicians meet requirements for Maintenance of Certification (MOC), particularly Part IV. The two institutions have participated in pilot efforts of individual certifying specialty boards to authorize institutions to approve quality improvement activities for Part IV credit.

Representatives from the two institutions will compare their experiences in these pilots and highlight their experiences to identify shared attributes while considering local nuances:

  • Overview of MOC Part IV, requirements of certifying boards, and national movement
  • Facilitating contextual factors, such as an infrastructure for integrated care delivery
  • Developing the support of key leaders of the medical staff, quality improvement, and education
  • Organizing a unit to manage operational functions related to meeting MOC requirements
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with related institutional groups
  • Engaging physicians and clinical leaders in having planned QI activities receive Part IV credit

Representatives will respond to questions from the audience regarding ideas for developing similar programs at other institutions.

The combined experiences will help individuals from other health care organizations develop plans for their own institution to align existing institutional QI and educational efforts with helping physicians meet MOC requirements.
